Anthology Haiku Competition "AN4 - 2001"

The Haiku Competition 2001 for poems in English organized by the Aleksandar Nejgebauer Haiku Club has received an even larger number of contributions from haidjin from all over the world and Yugoslavia than the competition in 2000. A total of 330 haiku poems were entered by 86 participants from 15 countries: Australia 2, Canada 3, Croatia 3, Romania 6, USA 13, Japan 1, Holland 1, Greece 1, England 1, UK 2, GB 1, Belgium 1, Slovenia 3, New Zealand 2, Ireland 1, Scotland 1, while the largest number of participants were from Yugoslavia. These numbers reveal that the internet presentation of the Novi Sad Competition and its renown have spread even to countries on the other side of the globe. The number of haiku poems entered bespeaks the fact that in the large number of very good and excellent poems, which it was a pleasure and joy to read, it was also very difficult to select the several best ones. Yet, this is expected of me as a judge, this year, like the previous ones, so I suggest that the following poems should be awarded, specially commended and commended :

Under the blanket

Blistavi mesec.
Voda drzi ogledal
osvih prisutnih.

The water holds a mirror
To all those present

1st Prize - 1. nagrada

Just a little twig
stemming from an old stump
casts its shadow on it

Jedva je grancica
izrasla iz starog panja
a vec baca senku na njega

In dawn's pale glow
shadows begin
building today

Pri bledoj svetlosti zore

zdanje danasnjeg dana

April gusts -
the bees have trouble
meeting with blossoms

pcele se s mukom
sastaju sa cvetom

Snowstorm
reading yesterday's paper
the boring parts

Zavejana snegom
citam jucerasnje novine
one dosadne rubrike.

Height marks of children;
he pauses before he paints
over the doorjam

Recke sa visinama dece;
zastaje na tren,
pa prefarba dovratak

Gerald England, UK

On moulting mare's back
jackdaws pick at loose hairs
lining for their nests

Kobila se linja
cavke joj cupkaju dlake
oblozice svoja gnjezda

Hosts of white wings
outside the church
moths at evensong

Mnostvo belih krilaca
svuda oko crkve
leptirice dosle na vecernje

"Page", USA

On its transit branch
a blue jay looking back -
increasing coolness

Na usputnoj grani
sojka se osvrce -
postaje sve hladnije

Commended haiku

Winona Baker, Canada

A jet enters
the summer afternoon
red poppies tremble

Uleti mlaznjak
u letnje popodne
bulke se tresu od straha

Carmen Sterba, Japan

Bitter wind -
between bare branches
the evening star

Ostar vetar -
kroz ogolelo granje
zvezda Vecernjaca

Giovanni Malito, Ireland

Over the pond -
a leaf returning
to the tree

Nosen preko jezerca -
list se vraca
na drvo

Sue Mill, Australia

Ornamental fountain
rocks in the pool
quivering

Ukrasna fontana
leluja se na vodi
podrhtava
