Rhyme and assonance

Rhyme

The haiku is too short to use rhymes

Rhyme injures the reading with its too insistent repetition. In addition it is an unwanted constraint upon lexical choice.

Rhythm

In certain languages, assonance, an internal chiming in the lines, is sought out. (I have changed your definition of assonance since in English at least assonance is not defined in terms of rhythm)

Noise

The haiku is a form that appeals to the five senses. There are certain techniques to introduce the idea of sounds and noises.

One of the most famous haiku from Basho can be translated as :

an old pond
a frog jumping in
sound of water

but also

an old pound
a frog jumping in
splash --
